Cloud Computing and Virtualization – Interview Questions

Go through the below for a basic overview of the standard concept questions to expect regarding Cloud and Virtualization.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the internet).

What are the services?

IAAS- Infrastructure as a service

PAAS- Platform as a service

SAAS-Software as a service

What is virtualization?

Virtualization is a technology that transforms hardware into software. It allows you to run multiple operating systems as virtual machines on a single computer.

What are the types of cloud computing?

Private Cloud- Private Cloud is cloud infrastructure dedicated to a particular organization.

Public Cloud- Public clouds are made available to the general public by a service provider who hosts the cloud infrastructure. Generally, public cloud providers like Amazon AWS, Microsoft and Google own and operate the infrastructure and offer access over the Internet.

Hybrid Cloud- Hybrid Clouds are a composition of two or more clouds (private, community or public) that remain unique entities but are bound together offering the advantages of multiple deployment models.

What is Hypervisor?

A hypervisor, also known as a virtual machine manager/monitor (VMM), is computer hardware platform virtualization software that allows several operating systems to share a single hardware host.

How many types of Hypervisors are there?

Bare metal or Type I hypervisor- hypervisors run directly on the host’s hardware to control the hardware and to manage guest operating systems.

Embedded or type II hypervisors- These hypervisors are run as software using an operating system such as Windows, Linux. Ex: VMware workstation

Products offer from VMware?

  • VMware workstation/Fusion: Hosted version which is installed on top of an existing operating system.
  • VMware ESX/ESXi: Bare-metal installation, installed directly on hardware like other operating systems.
  • vCenter server : Management application for ESX/ESXi hosts.
  • vCloud Director : Cloud solution from VMware.
  • VMware View: Desktop virtualization solution from VMware.
  • VMware Site Recovery Manager: Disaster recovery solution.
  • VMware vSphere Data Protection: Backup solution.
  • VMware Capacity Planner: Estimate consolidation ratios of existing physical infrastructure to virtual
